The word derives from Greek mousike, which originally meant “(art) of the Muses”. In ancient Greece, the Muses were the goddesses who inspired literature, science, and the arts. Music was seen as a divine gift and a fundamental part of education and civic life.

Music has been an integral part of human culture for tens of thousands of years. It is found in every known society, past and present. It is considered a cultural universal, meaning that all people across all cultures engage with music in some form.
